The show depicts Huey Freeman and his younger brother Riley, two young children who have been moved out of the South Side of Chicago with their grandfather Robert to live with him in the predominantly white suburb of Woodcrest (implied to be in Maryland). This relates to McGruder's childhood move from Chicago to Columbia, a diverse Maryland suburb.
